Great Books for Inspiration and Learning!

Postby Hellina Handbasket on Tue Oct 07, 2008 1:24 pm

I just got back from a walk into town where I found 'The Ecostore' ( http://www.grassrootsecostore.com.au/ecostore/ ) having a book sale- I picked up two books; Cultured Foods by Wendy Zefferet and Wild Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz. Both are on food fermentation and making things like cheese, soy milk, even a recipe for Kimchi in one (can't wait to try!) I love a bargain book- and getting both of these for $30 was fantastic (I've been eyeing them off for such a long time!)

These have got me thinking- what are the books on anything SOLE related that you find great for learning, inspiration and help? What cook book could you not do without?

I don't use cookbooks, but have been doing some great SOLE type reading lately...

From here: booklist-and-discussion-t209.html

The Ethics of What We Eat, by Peter Singer and Jim Mason... we can discuss it here:
who-has-read-the-ethics-of-what-we-eat-t183.html

Slow Food Nation by Carlo Petrini, Founder of the Slow Food Movement, it is translated from Italian, and so far, is quite interesting, with his 'diaries' making for interesting reading! Didn't read much, as the next book was very exciting...

Hungry City by Carolyn Steel , again, an interesting book that I've only just started, but she is a world renowned architect, who talks about what it takes to 'feed' cities and the consequences of that, incl. over consumption and people unaware of where their food actually comes from etc. OH, bummer, I had to take it back to the libray today, though only up to page 111, as someone else had it on request.

I am no. 49 on the library's request list, waiting for Michael Pollan's books, In defence of food : the myth of nutrition and the pleasures of eating , no. 41 for In defense of food : an eater's manifesto and no. 40 for The omnivore's dilemma : the search for the perfect meal in a fast-food world ... guess it shows others are also keen to read them!!

There are so many good books to read!!

I have just finished reading "How good are you?" by Sydney journalist Julian Lee. I really enjoyed it and realised I have my head in the sand about so many issues regarding the food I purchase for our family. There are in depth chapters on the beef industry, the pork industry, chickens, eggs, the ethics of coffee, fish and palm oil. Being a journalist, he has quoted many statistics and mind-boggling facts. He has managed to move away from the big supermarkets completely. I am not sure I will be able to get to that point but I am certainly making changes slowly. I have purchased my first batch of free trade coffee and chocolate and awaiting them in the mail very soon!
