It's Spring - what are you buying?

Postby stickyfingers on Sun Oct 05, 2008 6:03 pm

Yesterday at St.Kilda's Veg Out farmers market we basked in the glory of Spring.

People around us were buying Spring blooms and many farmers sold out of their wares early in the morning, with many enthusiastic new shoppers milling about. As groups clustered to chat, kids kicked footies on the adjoining oval and pet dogs did the anal meet and greet, we bought:

Sorrel
Watercress
Mustard Cress
Rocket
Nettles
Lettuce
Asparagus
Coriander
Parsley
Basil
Broccoli
Fennel
Celery
Cabbage
Bak Choi
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Chinese Broccoli
Venison Rump
Venison schnitzels
Chicken
Herb & garlic snags
Gravy Beef
Beef & Merlot family pie
Barramundi Fillet
Beetroot dip
Hommous
Babaghanoush
Blue Bay Cheese Goat's blue
Blue Bay Cheese Gruyere
Hope Farm Volkhorn Multigrain bread
6 small Turkish loaves of bread
Bacon
Apple juice
Oranges
Mandarines
Orange Juice
Tomatoes
Onions
Traditional Free range eggs
Organic Free Range grain fed eggs

Most of this will last us about 5weeks with a couple of extras bought in 2 weeks time at the Gasworks Farmers Market, such as pork & lamb products from Gypsy Pig and Greg Brown's bread, pasties and puddings. I will also buy a couple of items such as noodles and beanshoots from my usual Asian Grocer, dry goods like flour etc from Rita's stall and some Cha Sui (BBQ pork) from Linx at South Melbourne Market. I also buy bread from Noisette in Port Melbourne.

Amortised, I spend up to a maximum of $50 a week on food and drink for our two person household.

What fresh food are you buying at the moment?
