I'd heard about this place in St Kilda that has an honesty box for payment; pay what you can, pay what you think your meal and dining experience was worth, can't pay this time then pay next time, pay as an offering of donation because you love the concept so much, pay to allow Lentil to continue supporting the community with great food, while giving a leg up to locals in need of training, housing etc.
Check out the home page and a letter that sums up the place here, because I couldn't say it better:

Recently, after visiting the Collingwood Children's Farm for their monthly Farmers Market with a good friend and her son, we went for a walk around Abbortsford Convent, found an awesome tree to climb, had a looky through their glass artwork studio... as we were heading for the Bakery Cafe, we took a turn too soon and ended up in Lentil As Anything for a hot drink to end our lovely excursion. At first I didn't know where I was until I offered to pay for our hot choccies and the box on the counter was presented to me!
"ahh, where in Lentil!"
Our drinks were served in quaint glasses, and the smell of wholesome food wafted through the place as we admired the amazing array of sculptures hanging from the ceiling... it was like we were in a fishbowl.
I'll be back there again for a sample of that yummy smelling food sometime soon.
