Solution for vege garden in small area/ rental properties!

Saw this link on another forum, but thought might be of interest here! At $499, I think I will stick with looking for recycled pots when we start planting soon, but they re-use water and come with net covers too!

Wow they look amazing - but the price!

Our soil is sandy and good for nothing. Water just sheets off the top like a new car's polish. So we went to the fishmarket and grabbed long polystyrene salmon boxes out of the dumpsters to plant in. They've done well, but will eventually rot away. We have some self watering pots full of herbs too.

You can also build a planting frame by standing a cylinder of chicken wire in the garden and building it up with pea straw, some manure, worm castings (optional) and potting mix. Inside you can plant spuds, tomatoes or all kinds of things. I've also got recycled pots from the local tip in the past.

my first veggie garden was a bale of straw in an old wheelbarrow I nicked from someone's front lawn during the council hard rubbish collection!

Bore a couple of holes in the bottom, whack in the straw bale, and plant herb seedlings and tomato vines. It can be wheeled to the sunniest positions as the season change.

While that does look great, I think I'll stick with my pots too. I love the wheelbarrow idea though.

We've been using our old wheelbarrow as a herb pot for years. It sits right outside my kitchen door.

Actually, now that I've had a look. I was at a home show on the weekend and saw a water storage systme which had an area built into the top for plants, probably more so for making rainwater tanks less invasive and ugly in a small area, but would be great to combine rain water storage and a kitchen garden in a smaller area.
